Speaker Topics

Understanding Typical Language Development and Recognizing Signs of Communication Delays

What is normal language development and when should parents intervene and seek expert help? The Outreach Team at The Parish School will provide a comprehensive overview of the world of speech and language and how it relates to children under the age of 5. Identifying the signs of communication delays can help caregivers distinguish between expected developmental milestones in children and red flags indicating a child is at risk for a language disorder.

Navigating Tough Talks

We have all been in a parent meeting that involved hard to hear news. Either we avoid the uncomfortable conversation, make mistakes in the delivery or conduct a thoughtful and empathetic dialogue. Parish staff will provide participants with tools to navigate tough talks with first-hand accounts, research and clinical experience.

Understanding Language Development and Autism

Preschool teachers are often the first professionals to observe a child in a structured group learning environment. This presentation will help you understand typical language development and communication delays, as well as identification of early indicators that a child may be on the autism spectrum. You will learn strategies to help these children while they are waiting for services and how to increase your confidence in thoughtfully and empathetically sharing your concerns with your student’s families.

Linking Language and Learning

Learn the relationship between oral and written communication skills. This presentation will go over basic definitions of speech and language, then discuss how deficits in oral language may have later impact on reading, writing and learning.

Understanding Play Therapy

Children learn best when they demonstrate the ability to self-regulate in many areas, one of which is emotional regulation. Play Therapists help children understand, process and express emotions through the natural language of play. Learn what Play Therapy is and insights into how to support children’s emotional needs in the classroom.

“Our non-profit preschool has had the joy of involving The Parish School Speakers’ Bureau in our summer teacher training for three years! New and experienced teachers on our staff have gained valuable, research-based insight and practical skills from Amy Lerman’s interactive presentations year after year.  More importantly, her clear passion for children and how to help them thrive in group learning environments shines through in every talk she gives to our team. It ignites that energy we all need to repeatedly refresh in this challenging environment! Having access to free resources like the Speakers’ Bureau is pivotal to our success as an effective staff for our community’s preschoolers.”
