Kaufman Children’s Center
The Parish School is proud to partner with Nancy Kaufman, MA, CCC-SLP, Director of the Kaufman Children’s Center in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Kaufman is regarded as a national expert in the field of apraxia. As a consultant to The Parish School, Kaufman makes annual visits to the campus and The Carruth Center to train staff and observe individual students with apraxia and severe articulation disorders. The Parish School and The Carruth Center also send speech-language pathologists annually to train at the Kaufman Children’s Center.
University of Texas Health Science Center
The Parish School and The Carruth Center have been selected by the University of Texas Medical School at Houston Children’s Learning Institute as a site for resident neurologists and pediatricians to visit as part of their training rotations. Medical students routinely visit classrooms and therapy rooms to learn about identification and intervention techniques for children who have communication delays and learning differences. By inviting residents to our campus The Parish School and The Carruth Center help future neurologists and pediatricians identify, first-hand, early warning signs and how to make appropriate referrals to parents in need of early intervention for their children. The goal of the rotations is that residents will gain an appreciation that educators and therapists, as well as primary care doctors, are members of a collaborative team that provide care for children who have learning differences.
Social Thinking® by Michelle Garcia Winner
Social Thinking® therapy is based on the work of Michelle Garcia Winner, founder of the Center for Social Thinking. Michelle’s approach teaches how the social world works and focuses on teaching why we use the skills we do to help people better apply social skills to appropriate daily situations.
Social Thinking® is integrated into The Parish School’s curriculum and therapeutic services are open to the greater community through the Carruth Center. Therapeutic services are provided to children from preschool to high school.
